SO, WHAT ACTUALLY ARE POI?
FROM SWINGING SOCKS TO FIRE CHAINS
The first word that comes to mind when you hear the word LOOOOP is poi. But what are they? Many have no idea what poi are or may have never even heard the word. Some associate poi with the kind of fire chains that you occasionally see at medieval markets.
The term stems from the Maoris, the indigenous people of New Zealand. They originally use poi to hunt and later in ritualistic dances. At some point, poi were discovered by travellers and soon spread around the world. Today they are popular juggling accessory and have meanwhile become a discipline in their own right.
In a broad sense, poiing is a kind of juggling, but is really a type of spinning to be more precise. This term includes all objects that are not thrown, but are swung and spun, like staffs, hula-hoops and, well, poi.
With partner poi, as the name suggests, the poi are swung in close harmony with a partner. Rhythm, coordination and spatial perception are hugely important.
The technique is reminiscent of clockwork in which the cogs intermesh perfectly or even entwined or interwoven threads. The possibilities are virtually boundless and LOOOOP has made it its business to explore the potential of this technique.
